Excerpt from Creed Bond's personal journal:

I had a visitor today, asking about the Ascendancy. He claimed to have met a ship's AI that survived capture by the Ascendancy - such an occurrence is unprecedented. And this supposedly happened 150 years ago, which predates any records I have of the Ascendancy. He says he can get me an interview with the AI. In return, I told him about the ship graveyard at Pyla being an Ascendancy storage site. We're still no closer to working out the purpose of these grotesque monuments. Maybe I should have mentioned that Pyla is still in use? I'm sure it'll be fine.
