Seafaring Peril(57)Rigging or equipment is damaged or broken
Johnny notices an albatross on the yardarm of the ship. 'Finally, some good luck,' Johnny thinks to himself. Then, his gunner approaches him.
"Bad news, Captain," says the gunner. "One of the powder barrels has rotted from within, and the whole thing's spilled open. We've lost a whole barrel of gunpowder."
"Anything we can do about it?"
"Well, I've checked the other barrels and they seem fine, but we'll be down a barrel until we get into port and can replace it."
"Well, hopefully we won't get into any fights on the way," says Johnny.

Johnny sees a whaling ship in the distance. They appear to have the scent of one of the magnificent creatures, and are flinging harpoons into the water. The Spearhead continues on, leaving them to their deadly, dangerous business.

As they near Port Vesper, they spot an old ruin some ways inland.
"We don't have time to investigate, there are other crews chasing the same thing we are," says Johnny.
"But we always investigate ruins. Some of our best hauls have come from ruins," says one of the crew.
"Yeah, he's right," says another, "There could be an even bigger prize waiting for us inside."
"It'll still be there when we're done, we can mark it on the map and take a look another time," says Johnny."
The crew grumble, but eventually get back to work.

The ship arrives, and Johnny disembarks from the ship. He asks around about Brianna Aktuna, and soon hears rumors of a robbery of some kind.
Was Brianna hurt in the robbery? 50/50(13)Yes
Did she survive? 50/50(21)Yes
Supposedly, two nights ago, someone broke into her home to rob her. She was up late working on some old manuscript, and confronted the thief with a poker. She was stabbed, and the thief got away. Johnny makes his way to Brianna's home and knocks on the door. A servant answers.
"Good day, I'm Captain Johnathan Glass, here to see Miss Brianna Aktuna."
"Is she expecting you?"
"No, unfortunately I didn't have time to send word ahead."
"I'll see if she's available," says the servant, "You can wait in the lobby."
Johnny is ushered into the opulent waiting area and sits on a comfortable sofa. A few minutes pass, and then Brianna enters the room. She's wearing some kind of uniform, but Johnny doesn't recognize it - it's not Ossik military or city guard. She is walking with a limp, using a cane to keep herself steady. Johnny stands up as he enters, and she makes her way to the sofa opposite Johnny's and sits down, at which point he sits.
"Miss Aktuna, I-"
"Cut the shit," says Brianna, "You're some cutthroat or adventurer here for information, you're not going to trick me into thinking you're some kind of noble soul."
"Right. Well, how are you feeling? What happened?"
"I got stabbed in the leg by some bugger with a dagger. If I'd had my sword it would have been a different story, but all I had was a poker."
"Was anything taken?"
"Just an old journal."
"Not..."
"Yes, the journal with the coordinates to Sally Slaughter's treasure."
"Ah. That's what I came here to look at. The coordinates from the book lead to the Gulf of Matesh, not the Sea of Iron."
"Yes, I noticed that too. The book gives those coordinates, but the legend says the Sea of Iron," says Brianna.
"Is there anything else you can tell me?" asks Johnny.

"The captain of the Tarantula came to see me the day of the robbery, asking basically the same questions you did. He looked at the book but didn't find anything. The man who robbed me that night had a spider tattooed on his hand, and the Tarantula left dock at dawn the next day, moving fast."
"So, chances are, if I want to find the logbook, I need to find that ship."
"Don't forget, the logbook belongs to me if you do find it."
"Thanks. I hope you get better quickly."
"As long as the wound doesn't get infected I'll be fine in a few days."
Johnny says his goodbyes and heads back to the ship. On the way, he trades in his broken spyglass for a brand new one. The Spearhead sets sail at speed, hoping to catch up to the Tarantula.

Ship First Look(84)Torn sails and broken rigging
The ship looks badly damaged - the sails and rigging have been battered. The Tarantula's crew are busily trying to patch and fix the broken ship. The lookout sees the Spearhead and yells something, and the crew stops working on the ship and climbs down from the rigging, ready for battle.
"They don't look like pirates. Let's try getting closer so we can talk to them," says Johnny. As they approach, the Tarantula fires a warning shot - they clearly don't want the Spearhead to approach. "Well, looks like we have a fight on our hands," says Johnny. "Get in close and try to board them."

Pay the Price(27)Your action causes collateral damage or has an unintended effect
The Spearhead and the Tarantula exchange fire as the Spearhead closes in. Suddenly, there's a huge explosion aboard the enemy ship, and it starts to sink, quickly. It's as if all their powder barrels went up at once. Men start jumping from the ship like rats, some swimming for shore and others heading towards the Spearhead.
"So much for boarding them," says Johnny.
The men swimming towards the Spearhead are greeted with musket fire, and swiftly turn around and head for the beach. Within minutes, the Tarantula is completely submerged beneath the waves.
"What now?" asks Dorian, the first mate.
"That logbook is somewhere aboard that wreck. I'm going to swim down there and find it."
Johnny goes to his cabin and changes into his swimming gear - just a pair of shorts and a dagger. He dives off the side of the ship and starts swimming to the Tarantula. He moves swiftly, not wanting the book to get any more waterlogged than it has to.

As he searches the cabin, he sees a face at the rear window. He swims over to the window and looks out - there are three people outside, only instead of legs they have tails like fish. Johnny has heard tales of these creatures before - they're supposed to be helpful but occasionally mischievous - but he'd always thought they were just sailor's tales. He waves at the creatures, and one of them waves back. Another of the creatures says something, and the three of them swim off back into the depths.
Johnny returns to his search.

Johnathan finds that many of the doorways are blocked on the lower decks - the damage from the explosion collapsed most of the ship. Nevertheless, he searches what he can.

Eventually he finds the logbook tucked away inside one of the bunks in the forecastle. Apparently the thief wasn't working under the orders of the captain after all. It's completely sodden, and is going to need extensive and painstaking restoration work to get back into a readable condition, and Johnny doesn't have that kind of time. He takes the book back to the Spearhead, and climbs aboard.
"What now, captain?" asks Dorian.
"We'll head back to Port Vesper and return the book, then head to the Gulf of Matesh. If there's nothing there, the book should be repaired by the time we return," says Johnny.
