Begin a Session
Johnny is on the way to Erast on the trail of a job.
Begin a Session(67)Key location is made unsafe or becomes mired in conflict
"A trained knight could beat ten men easily," says the knight.
"Aye, because a trained knight has thousands of crowns worth of equipment in armor and weapons. If you give those ten men the same amount of money to buy their own equipment and recruit others, the knight wouldn't stand a chance." replies his drinking companion.
The young knight is not used to drinking. The Three Lillies is not the safest place to learn how to pace yourself.
"Well, the knight has earned it, through honor and valor," counters the knight.
"Or blind luck."
"Luck has nothing to do with it. I could take on ten men, easily."
Around the room, heads start to turn at this point in the conversation, but the knight fails to notice.
"Er, maybe we should change the subject," says his companion who only met the knight two drinks ago and suddenly wishes he was somewhere else.
"No, no. I don't think you understand," continues the knight. "Knights are just better at fighting than everyone else."
There's the sound of a chair scraping on the wooden floor as a man stands up. He is an enormous brute of a man, and he starts making his way over to the knight's table. Some of the other drinkers start making their way to the exits, others stand up and follow the brute. Sticky Joe, sitting in a booth at the back of the tavern, settles into his chair with a grin, ready to enjoy the show.
"Steady on, Davey, he's just a kid. He doesn't know what he's saying," says the knight's drinking companion.
"He says he's better at fighting than anyone else in here. That sounds like a challenge to me," says Davey.
"Leave the kid alone," comes a voice from the other side of the tavern. "We were all young and stupid once. And if you hurt him, his order will come here looking for revenge. Just send him on his way."
"Will you stop calling me a kid," says the knight, getting to his feet. "I'll have you know I'm a fully fledged knight, as of today."
"So that means you could take me and nine of my mates in a fight?" says Davey, who dwarfs the young knight.
"He's talking about on the battlefield fighting hungry bandits, Davey, not fistfights in the tavern," says the knight's drinking companion.
Davey stands nose to nose with the knight who, to his credit, doesn't back down. "Is that what you're talking about? Hungry bandits? Or do you think that you can take on anybody?"
"I'll take on anybody," says the knight. "Death before dishonor." Davey swings a punch at the young knight, who manages even in his drunken state to sidestep at the last second. A chair is thrown into the fray, and suddenly half the tavern decides it's time to settle old scores with each other, while the other half tries to fight their way to the door.
Momentum:2 → 3
As this is happening, the door swings open and Johnathan Glass walks in. The fight rages around him as he walks to the bar. "I'll have a mug of ale. I'm looking for Sticky Joe," he says to the barman.
"This is a bit of a bad time," says the barman, who's ducking down behind the counter. "You might want to take a walk around the block until things settle down."
Glass sighs and turns around to watch the action. A mug is thrown, and its contents end up drenching Johnny's shirt. Johnny looks down at his shirt, then back up at the melee. He sighs again. He picks up the mug and throws it back in the direction it came from, then jumps at the nearest combatant.
Battle(Iron)—6 vs 4|5 Momentum:3 → 5
Did Davey beat the knight? Likely(80)No
Johnny holds his own until the city guard show up to break up the fight. Since nobody saw how the fight started and everybody was acting in self defense, no arrests were made. Things calm down, and everybody starts helping clear up the broken chairs and tables. Spare furniture is brought out from the storeroom and soon the tavern looks as if nothing ever happened. Davey, having been knocked on his arse by the young knight during the brawl, has befriended him and the two are drinking together and seemingly having a great old time.
Johnny sits down at Sticky Joe's booth. "Sticky Joe? I heard you're looking for a diver."
"And you are?"
"Johnathan Glass. Johnny. From the Spearhead."
"Johnny Glass? The Ikoban who ran away?"
"You have a good memory, that was a long time ago."
"Well, I'll be damned. You're back in town?"
"I'm back for this job. I heard it was lucrative. After that, I don't know."
"Well, I don't know what you heard but the pay range is somewhere between lucrative and nothing."
"Nothing?"
"There's a legend of a pirate called Sally Slaughter. Supposedly she had a huge haul of gold in her hold when her ship was sank in the Sea of Iron. Recently, a collector came across the ship's log of the ship that sank her, and it includes the coordinates of the battle."
"So you want me to sail out to the coordinates and dive down for the treasure?"
"Aye. You have a diving bell?"
"Something like that. The dive won't be an issue. What's the catch?"
"I'm not the only one with the coordinates. There are surely other crews with divers of their own looking for the treasure."
"I thought it sounded too easy. Alright then, I'll sail to those coordinates and look for the treasure. And I'll split whatever I find with you. By Iron, I vow."

Joe slides a slip of paper to Johnny. "These are the coordinates," he says. Johnny looks at them closely and says,
"Are you sure these are right? They look too far north to be in the Sea of Iron."
"This is what was written in the logbook," replies Joe.
"Hmm. I'll check my charts, but something feels off. Where can I find this logbook? The coordinates might be in some sort of code."
"The collector is in Port Vesper. A woman by the name of Given Name(27)Brianna Family Name(46)Aktuna."
"I'll be on my way, then. I'll be back when I have something." Johnny stands up, and leaves the tavern.
He heads to the Ikoban adventurers guild where he was raised. He goes inside, and Given Name(106)Kwan Family Name(105)Hawking is stationed at the front desk. Kwan is around the same age as Johnny, and joined the guild about six months before Johnny left.
"Kwan? Is that you?" asks Johnny.
"Johnny! I didn't think I'd see you again. Glad to see you're alive at least. How are you?"
"I'm doing well. It's Captain Glass now. And you?"
"Pretty bloody far from captain, I'll tell you that much."
"You'll get there. Is the Ogre still in charge around here?"
"Oh yes, he is most definitely still in charge."
"I'm going to go to his office and see him, catch you later." Johnny goes inside the building. Technically, he's no longer a member of the guild and shouldn't be allowed in, but given his history with the place nobody challenges him. He sees some familiar old faces and catches up with a few people from his past, and eventually makes his way to the Ogre's office. He knocks on the door and enters without waiting for a response.
The Ogre is sitting behind his desk, looking through some papers. "Johnny fucking Glass," he says. "Didn't know you were back in town."
"Just got back today, thought I'd visit while I was in town."

"Good to see you," says the Ogre. "I know we didn't part on the best of terms but I understand what it's like to be young and wanting to blaze your own trail. How are you doing? Are you staying in town long?"
"I'm doing well, I'm Captain Glass now, of the Spearhead. I'm just in town following a job, so I'll be heading out again soon. How's the guild doing?"
"Oh, the usual. Training, doing jobs, keeping the fleet in shape and up to date."
"Well if you want to subcontract any jobs just let me know."
"If I can bloody find you, you'll be top of the list."
"Ok, well I have to get moving. It was good to see you. I should be able to stick around for a few days after I turn in this job, we should go for a few beers or something," says Johnny.
"Sounds good. Stay safe."
He heads back to the Spearhead and compares the coordinates to his maps and charts.

The coordinates point to the Gulf of Matesh, north of the Sea of Iron as Johnny had suspected. Fortunately, Port Vesper is on the way to the Gulf so he'll be able to stop in and look at the original journal on the way. He readies the crew, and they set sail at dawn towards Vesper.

The crew sets sail along the coast towards Port Vesper. Not far out of dock, they sail too close to a submerged rock and the bottom of the ship scrapes along it. The crew is able to patch the leaks quickly, but it will need proper repairs sooner rather than later.

The underwater rocks are more extensive than Johnny realized. The ship has to carefully navigate through them - taking the longer route around them would actually have been quicker.

Cursed Ship First Look(22)Cloaked by smoke and ash
The lookout spots a ship, and Johnny takes a look through his spyglass. It's flying Ossik colors and is trailed by a plume of smoke - it seems as if there's a fire on board. "They look like they need help. We're changing course to meet the ship."
The Spearhead goes to meet the burning ship. When they get close, the captain yells "We have a fire and we can't put it out. Can you come aboard and help us?" Johnny and a few good men bring buckets and jump across to the other ship. The fire is in the cargo hold, and the smoke is thick and has a strange smell.
"What is that burning?" asks Johnny.
"Incense," says the captain. "Luckily it burns slowly, but if it spreads to the ship we're done for."
Johnny and his men start helping out with the dousing efforts.

They move swiftly, and soon the fire has been put out. The captain thanks them, and they return to the Spearhead and head on towards Port Vesper.

Johnny takes out his spyglass and scans the horizon, only to see that the image is blurred and out of focus. The heat from the fire must have warped one of the lenses. He'll need to get it fixed or replaced before he can use it again.
